Team Type 1 co-founder Joe Eldridge recently visited with Dr. Mark Shepherd, an endocrinologist and avid cyclist himself in Tupelo, Miss., about the benefits of Omnipod, one of Team Type 1's sponsors.
Dr. Shepherd leads a four-day ride around Mississippi each October to raise awareness about diabetes to the community. Participants ride 60-80 miles a day, with stops in each town to speak to the community about diabetes.
During his visit with Dr. Shepherd, Eldridge explained how the OmniPod System on his arm pumps insulin - but not like a conventional insulin pump. Its manufacturer, the Insulet Corporation, doesn't even refer to it an insulin pump. Rather, it is an insulin pod. It received FDA clearance in January of 2005.
"The doctors and nurses were fascinated by the Omnipod and the options it is going to give to their patients on pumps, as well as the ones who are not currently on pump therapy," Eldridge said. "This might just be what they are looking for."
